Does anyone have thoughts on RAID enclosures? I have ~20TB of data and growing, with offsite backups of the important stuff.

Been using separate external drives; the largest one just died. Got me to thinking about local redundancy.

"La La Land" A gem. An exception to my thesis that musicals set post-WWII suck. (I challenge you to name a _good_ musical set after 1945.)

"Office Christmas Party" Exactly what it says on the tin, plus Cortney Vance's ass.

"Why Him?" A very funny movie with an awful title. Walter White makes the comedy with the guy who killed Kim Jong-un.

We had our traditional Christmas. Saw two movies today (and one yesterday.) Tweet-sized reviews to follow.

Do they know something I don’t?

Tonight's win puts the #Mariners at 20-17 on games I have attended this season.

At least it wasn't a shutout.

That scene from Carrie, but with maple syrup; that's the @Mariners right now.

These Blue Jays fans are the most obnoxious visiting fans I've ever seen here; they're the Raiders fans of baseball. #toomanycanadians

I hope M's fans on the road aren't as obnoxious as these Blue Jays fans.

The @Mariners had better bring it tonight. Canadians in numbers can be unruly.

Never seen this many fans of the visiting team here at a @Mariners games. M's fans easily outnumbered 4-1.

August 2016

Stop me if you've heard this one—A Puig, a Canó, and Trout walk into a stadium...

Well, the @Mariners gave us a nail biter of a ninth, but Diaz pulled off save #2.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm doing both Angular and React wrong. Perhaps even JavaScript itself.

Computers are are hard, you guys.

In all seriousness though, I totally could've written this app in Angular in like 1/5 of the time. I'd just have no idea what it meant later

Angular is the Perl of JavaScript, it completely makes sense at the time, but 6 weeks later... What the fuck?

React is *way* easier after a bottle of wine.

On the downside, though, JavaScript in general is *way* harder.

React makes very little sense to begin with, but it’s completely inscrutable after two double rum and Cokes.

September 2015

It’s a Rage Against the Machine day, apparently.

For the record, developing in Firefox blows.

Clearing the cache basically requires getting a new computer.

The command is `grunt`, but the package is `grunt-cli`. Because, obviously.

Our row got upgraded. The view from our new seats.

I see now why React-ers use inline styles; the markup React generates makes sane CSS incredibly difficult. At this point, inline is easier.

My coworker takes pair programming very seriously.

Dammit! I _still_ maintain that <img> should have a default display of `block`, not `inline-block`. #fourfuckingpixels

Maybe I'm already drunk, but that last RT made me literally laugh out loud.

Happy Hour in the 'Pen at Safeco really is the happiest of hours. Go #Mariners

It is simply astonishing how bad this code is that year-ago-me wrote. I broke this app in so many new and interesting ways.

Longest work week ever is finally over. Time to reward myself with some wine, Game of Thrones, and… more work.

My coworkers are constantly bathing and napping *ON* my desk.

Ugh. That was a rough game. I really don't get the hype around Fernando.

April 2015

It’s really shocking how much acreage a 14 lb. cat can cover in vomit. Good morning!

Friday is gonna be big day for me, as it will also be my last day at Urbanspoon.

Moving on to thrilling and unspecified new challenges.

I don’t know what this means, but I am unspeakably excited to find out.

“@PearlJam: Friday.”

Daylight Saving Time aka Your Semi-Annual Reminder That Watches Have Batteries, Which Don't Last Forever, And Is It 5:55 AM Or PM?

Given to Fly against Alive? WTF?! Even Flow against Rearviewmirror? C’mon! They’re all SO GOOD, how can you ask me to choose?

All four of my #PearlJamMadness finalists are from the first three albums—nothing from the later records. But they’re ALL so good.

I don’t understand why so many people completely misunderstand Robert Heinlein’s writing.

There’s NOTHING right-wing about “Moon”.

In fact, “Moon” is _why_ I lean left. That book made me question everything conservative.

“Moon” is about a revolt against a conservative colonial power, with a huge subplot revolving around a “line marriage”.

And no, tab-completion should not factor into that naming decisions.

The number of times you will type a variable/class/method name should factor into naming decisions.

That’s not architecture, that’s a naming convention. And not a very good one at that.

I have an inexplicably visceral reaction whenever I see BEM mentioned as a “solution” to CSS architecture.

“More variables.”

“Less variables.”

“Just use an explicit child selector and an *. No problem.”

“Go with BEM, because it’s 2015 and everyone uses Emmet, so no problem having to type War & Peace as a fucking selector.”

CSS architecture is a complex problem, but I’m convinced there exists a Right Way to do it. Just not anything I’m seeing in that thread.

I have to say, I’m _really_ enjoying #angularjs. I still find it obtuse at times, but it’s expressive in its own way & refreshingly modular.

A pox on you if you use JavaScript to disable pasting into a form on the web. Especially password fields. There’s NO good reason for that.

February 2015

Live long and prosper, friends. Live long and prosper.

Llamas on the llam!!

“@abc15: a FREE #ABC15 bumper sticker AND mug for ANYONE who catches these llamas! ”

This morning I used @sassmeisterapp in a way I never would have imagined when I started building it. Very surreal.

Fun fact: No two #angularjs tutorials do things the same way. And, so far, none of the code in O’Reilly’s book works with v1.3.x

I rarely drink when I get home at the end of the day, but today was... a day.

2015 needs to improve soon.

Dammit 2015! Why did you have to start out with so many changes? This kind of tumult needs to be spread out.

Been using this really cool app sassmeister.com Very helpful for sketching out ideas.

Wish someone would’ve told me about it sooner.

Hey Seattle friends, drive safe out there today. I know it’s raining and your instinct is to drive faster & dodge the raindrops, but don’t.

January 2015

What? I don’t… I can’t… Ugh. Why does all the bad code have to happen to me?

Hello Safeco Field! I've missed you!

Pattern libraries as style API contracts. I think there might be something in that.

Double argh! “localhost” is hardcoded, too. Now I don’t get any images when viewing the app from an IE vm. So dumb.

Argh. Be nice, don’t hardcode port numbers in config files. Now I _have_ to run this app on 3000, otherwise—KABLOOEY!

It’s _ten minutes_ long! I don’t think _I_ could talk about it for that long.

I’m reluctant to spend so much time building a thing that needs to exist, but which I myself don’t actually use.

It sucks to realize on day 3 of a 12 day code vacation that 6 months of work needs be ditched. Glad I had something else to occupy my time.

Readmore.js v2 is done; now to re/write docs & publish.

Not what I’d intended to do during this code-cation, but I’m happy w/the results.

Now I can finally use the ice cream maker attachment my mother-in-law gave me off my Amazon wishlist _5 years ago!_

December 2014

Saying “No” to pull requests on OSS makes me feel like a jerk. Someone spent THEIR time improving MY project and here I am rejecting it.

OMG. Just spent 5 hours debugging code that worked flawlessly when I wrote it 3 weeks ago.

This is NOT the vacation I had planned.

Oddly, I enjoy deleting Sass more than writing it.

Side-by-side highlighted diffs on the command line: jefftk.com/icdiff

Drop whatever you're doing right now and go see Interstellar.

It's the best sci-fi film since 2001—arguably better in some ways.

I’m totally over invitations to try beta software; by the time I receive my invitation, I’ve forgotten what it was and why I cared.

I want to stab this horrible code in the eye, but it’s so bad I can’t _find_ its eye.

Listening to NPR; hearing a lot of Rebuplican pols talk about fixing the economy "from the bottom up." Did they give up on "trickle down"?

This dependency chain is going to be the death of me.

Finalized our 2015 @Mariners season tickets. Now trying to convince the wife that we _need_ a vacation to AZ next spring. Doesn’t look good.

That said, if a human dosen’t have to read or edit it, JSON is a pretty decent serialized object transport.

JSON is a shitty format. There, I said it.

OMG, JS-people, pick an effing coding style and effing stick with it.

Three different tutorials with three different coding styles.

ARGHHH!!! Looking at an *actual* tutorial for a Node.js package that omits all the semi-colons. I thought we determined that was bad?!

Ugh. The deeper I dig, the more fragmented this community appears. No single solution to problems; no authoritative source of information.

Really?! There’s an NPM module called “Hooker”?! Has the Node.js community learned nothing from Ruby & Rails?

Really, @Rackspace, I filled out the online form and *still* have to call you?!

The CSS I’m writing now makes me feel *very* dirty.

For the record, styling HTML w/CSS is the least intuitive, most unnatural aspect of modern web development.

I’ve seen clearfix applied to elements that aren’t floated. Or, worse yet, applied to the everything but the correct element.

“clearfix” has become a magical artifact that can cure all your layout woes.

It’s astonishing how many front end devs don’t understand what the “clearfix” hack is or how it actually works.

Is that 9 8-hour days? Or did they actually mean 3 bus. days?

January 2011

My MacBook Pro has died.

Preliminary c.o.d.: USB bus failure.

You will be missed, old friend.

~sniff~

Excellent piece on American religiosity. SPOILER ALERT: We're not as devout as we claim to be. mee.bo/h39Swq

The effect of syntax coloring on code is amazing; been using the same TM theme since '06 & I hardly recognize my own code in a new theme.

Anonymous Pro (j.mp/7m58S) at 16pt is also very nice--unusable below 14pt and it has a funky @ symbol--but very crisp and clean.

Playing with fixed-width fonts in TextMate. Used Monaco for years, but I just discovered Menlo; @ 14pt it's like I have a brand new editor.

Damn! Just saw the Paramount's marquee; we're going to miss Penn & Teller tomorrow night. Why doesn't anyone tell me these things?

And is that Verdana on the location titles?! WTF, Human Target?

I used to enjoy Human Target's title sequence. Now I can't FF fast enough. I miss @bearmccreary's theme.

The first season of Human Target was one of the best adventure shows I've ever seen. Season two, not so much.

The second season of Human Target just isn't as much fun without @bearmccreary's score.

Green beans and fried onions. Yum!

I love photographing snow

Wow! 2 #TextMate updates in one week! Is it possible TM isn't dead? Maybe it's just pining for the fjords.

Interesting: Safari 5 doesn't save PNG webpage previews while my MBP is on battery.
